26 November 2001

A new cash plan, Health Additions, designed to complementprivate medical insurance has been launched by BUPA. The first product of itstype on the market, it offers payments towards everyday health care expenseswithout duplicating the benefits available through medical insurance cover.

Steve Flanagan, BUPA sales director said:"Traditionally, cash plans offer a wide range of benefits for differentcircumstances and life stages. This makes them a slightly less attractiveoption for people with medical insurance as they end up paying twice for somebenefits such as hospital stays and consultations. In addition, people areoften covered for personal accidents under other insurances such as their lifeor household policies. Research amongst our customers highlighted the need fora product which complements the benefits of medical insurance for a smallmonthly cost."

BUPA Health Additions costs just 10 a month irrespectiveof age and is available to people who do not have medical insurance as well asthose who have. It offers one level of cover with 90 towards optical, dental, hearing care and chiropody expenses, up to 40 for prescription charges andbetween 50 and 125 for private GP costs. A range of prices are available tocover different family groupings : single - 10 a month, single with children -13 a month, couple - 17 a month and family - 20 a month. Unlike most cashplans, the qualifying period for company paid schemes is immediate and forpersonal cover is just three months.

"In designing BUPA Health Additions, we have includedcover for common health care expenses which are inevitable and predictable. For120 a year, you only pay half the costs of these bills. This product bringstogether BUPA's extensive knowledge of private medical insurance and the cashplan market" said Steve.
