UK SHOP PRICE INDEX - MARCH 2007: NON-FOOD PRICES KEEPING A LID ON HIGH STREET INFLATION
4 April 2007
The BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index (SPI) for March showed that prices were 0.69% higher than at the same time a year ago. Food inflation edged up slightly in March and deflation was still prevalent in non-food, with prices lower than in March 2006. Food inflation is still the main driver of shop price inflation, rising from 2.60% in February to 3.62% in March. Non-food prices continue to keep the SPI significantly lower than the official government measures of inflation, emphasising once again that there is little inflationary pressure coming from the high street.
