A New Direction. A Review of the School Academies Programme, published by the TUC.
13 July 2007
Commenting on the report by the TUC on Academies, Steve Sinnott, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Britain’s largest teaching union said:
“This is the most thorough analysis of the academies programme that has been published. The TUC’s arguments for returning Academies to the local authority family of schools are overwhelming.
“Of course business has a stake in the success of schools, but that should be on the basis of a genuine partnership. When businesses take over schools then the voices of teachers, parents and the community in the running of their schools are lost.
“This report sets out a road map which includes a thorough independent review. The adoption of this proposal would end the divisiveness inherent in the Academies initiative.
“I believe that this report sets out a realistic direction of travel which should be in tune with the Government’s new emphasis on standards not structures”.
