NUFFIELD REVIEW OF 14-19 EDUCATION

20th October 2006

Commenting on the Nuffield Review of 14-19 education Steve Sinnott, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers said:

“The Nuffield Report is right to identify  ‘policy busyness’ as obscuring the Government’s achievements in education.

“There still seems to be little understanding of the limits to schools’ capacity to absorb change or of the need to foster the teaching profession’s ownership of initiatives.

“There remain knotty issues in 14-19 education which need tackling. Despite the introduction of specialist diplomas in 2008, there are still likely to be sixteen year olds not in education, employment or training whose needs will remain unmet.

“I urge the Government to show some courage and  reflect on what can still be salvaged from the Tomlinson Report”.
