NHBC LAUNCHES STANDARDS ON GREEN ROOFS

Continuing to meet the drivers of sustainability under the Code for Sustainable Homes and the Government’s zero carbon homes target NHBC has responded with a newly developed set of NHBC’s Technical Standards incorporating guidance on green roofs.

NHBC’s Standards are the key reference text for builders and developers. Following success in Europe, particularly in Germany and Scandinavian countries, builders and developers in the UK are increasingly opting for green roofs. These can bring attractive plant life into urban areas, improve biodiversity, help reduce the risk of flooding by attenuating rainfall and even help improve thermal efficiency in homes.

The new Standards, which are effective from 1 September, give detailed guidance on the different types of flat roofs and where they are most appropriate for use. Chapter 7.1 “Flat roofs and balconies” also explains the two types of green roofs currently in use and details the need to choose a “system” where the manufacturer is responsible for the complete design and installation.
