Unite fears Welsh economy at ‘tipping point’ with continued manufacturing meltdown
15th April 2008
Unite the union has condemned the decision by 3M today that 185 jobs are to go at their Gorseinon plant and the union has voiced concerns about the future of manufacturing in Wales.
The decision by American multinational 3M follows further job losses at Avon Inflatables and Orion.
Andy Richards, Regional Secretary for Unite the union, said: “We are now facing a critical situation for manufacturing in Wales as more companies leave in the search of cheaper labour costs in Eastern Europe and Asia.
“Unite cannot identify any political will at present to protect Welsh workers and our economy from the actions of these multinational companies. Our members look to their political leaders to ensure they do their best to protect their livelihoods. Sadly they are fast losing any remaining faith that this is being done.”
Unite believes the case of 3M is particularly disappointing as the company continually highlighted it’s partnership with its employees and their representatives. Unfortunately 3M have put profits before any loyalty to its employees.
“Unite is extremely concerned that the manufacturing sector in Wales is on the cusp of an irreversible tipping point, which if not reversed will have disastrous social and economic costs to the Welsh nation. Lack of protection for Welsh workers and growing instability in the world economy is likely to herald a very chill wind blowing across Wales in the near future. The effects of this will be severe with the potential to tear apart the very fabric of our society," added Richards.
Unite in concerned that when jobs such as those at 3M are lost, they are replaced with insecure, low paid employment in the service sector. These jobs do not provide the foundations for young people to flourish and play a full and constructive role within their communities.
“Unite will do everything within its power to support and protect its members, and indeed the Welsh nation, from the actions of socially irresponsible multinationals,” added Richards.
