Cambridge Primary Review – NUT view

13 October 2006

Commenting on the announcement of an independently funded two-year review of primary education to be carried out by Professor Robin Alexander of Cambridge University, Steve Sinnott, NUT General Secretary, said:

“Such a review is long overdue. The primary curriculum is overloaded and over prescriptive and wastes teaching and learning time. It is a regime that has needed major re-examination for a long time.

“I would hope that the Government accords this review the gravity it deserves. The Government should recognise that the mass of change imposed on primary teachers together with an over-prescriptive curriculum may have led to a lack of cohesion and loss of creativity.

“I hope the Government recognises that this is a job it should have been doing.”
