Key Stage 1 results – NUT view

30 August 2007

Commenting on the analysis of Key Stage 1 results, Steve Sinnott, General Secretary of Britain’s biggest teachers’ organisation, the NUT, said:

“The results show the remarkable achievement of England’s primary schools. Critics will seek to find fault but the results show that schools have sustained very high standards over time.

“Lord Adonis should recognise that phonics has always been central to the teaching of reading. I look forward to an end to the teaching of reading being used to promote a political standpoint and to the development of an understanding that confident teachers make the difference to a child’s success.

“The issue of girls out-performing boys has come to the fore in these results. It is an issue that requires full and detailed research rather than allowing the problem to continue unexamined.”
