Government launch of generationXperience, the first ever national day for older people in the UK

Age Concern’s Director General Gordon Lishman comments:

"GenerationXperience is a great opportunity to celebrate the achievements of older people and embrace our ageing population.

"For the first time ever in the UK, there are more people over 65 than under 16 and the over 85s are the fastest growing age group – set to quadruple to around four million by 2051.

"As a society, we must all recognise the importance of older people as carers, workers, grandparents, volunteers, and perhaps most importantly, as individuals.

"Older people are not a homogenous group – within the older generation there are millions of different people, with a wealth of different experiences, needs, cultures and values.

"There have been many improvements for older people in recent years.

"The introduction of the Pension Credit and Winter Fuel Payment has lifted many pensioners out of poverty, and the age discrimination legislation goes some way to protect older workers.

"But there are still many older people, particularly those who are still living on a low income or experiencing poor health, inequality or social exclusion, who need more support.

"We - individuals, employers and the Government - must all continue to work together to help make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience ".
