Voice raises concerns about 'nanny cams'

28 April 2008

Philip Parkin, General Secretary of Voice: the union for education professionals, was interviewed about ’nanny cams’ on BBC Breakfast, 28 April 2008:

“'Nanny cam' sales increase”: “Hidden cameras are being used by parents to check on their children's carers, according to some online retailers.”:

Philip Parkin also said: “We're not in favour of such surveillance. Parents should be able to trust the nanny they employ, and should therefore employ a qualified/experienced nanny and check qualifications and references. If parents don't trust their nanny, why did they employ her?

“'Nannycams' are no substitute for proper checks as they can cover only limited areas of the home and not usually the garden or, for example, the park, cars etc.”

“We also believe that nannies should be part of the compulsory national registration scheme for those working with children.”
