Threat of more airline unrest as Thomas Cook attempt to cut crew
08/04/2008
Unite say that strike action may be a possibility to head off attempts by the company to cut the number of cabin crew on their flights.
Unite say that the cuts being proposed by Thomas Cook will affect 80% of Thomas Cook flights, causing the crew extra stress and compromising passenger safety and the company’s reputation. The cuts being proposed will usually mean one less crew per every Thomas Cook flight.
Unite trade union is sawing a member of the Thomas Cook cabin crew in half outside of the company’s shareholder meeting this Thursday (10th April) to draw attention to the company’s planned job cuts.
Unite say that as well as being dangerous, the cuts may result in industrial action. The union say if the company continue with proposals it will have no choice but to ballot its’ members.
According to the company the proposed cuts will save the company £750,000 a year, exactly half the £1.5 million bonus the company CEO, Manny Fontela-Novoa, has just awarded himself.
Unite National Officer for Thomas Cook, Kevin Hall, said: "The cuts proposed by Thomas Cook will take its crew levels down to the very minimum allowed by the Civil Aviation Authority. If imposed, it will mean that crew will be put under even more stress and in danger of losing their jobs.
"It is important to remember that cabin crew are the public face of an airline and in emergency situations are at the front line. To make matters worse this is a company that can afford to staff its’ flights properly, to look after its crew and ensure the safety of their passengers.
"If Thomas Cook is intent on pushing on with its plans to make these dangerous cuts, Unite will have no alternative but to ballot its 900 members for industrial action."
