Unite comment on Royal Bank of Scotland

29 April 2008

Graham Goddard Unite Deputy General Secretary said: "Unite the union has today called for urgent talks with RBS to discuss the issues around the proposed sale of their insurance division and the speculation in the press regarding the potential sale of Tesco Personal Finance and Mentor. Last week the workforce of the bank heard news of the possible sale of the insurance division and the news today about a possible sale of Tesco Personal Finance and Mentor will cause further anxiety and uncertainty for the employees.

"In a climate of continuous speculation about job losses in the sector Unite is calling on the financial services industry to recognise the value of their employees and improve employee consultation on their business plans. Rumours this week about an additional 7,000 job losses within RBS Global Markets as part of the ongoing ABN AMRO integration are deeply alarming for staff and Unite will be raising these concerns with management."
