Commenting on the statement by Christine Gilbert, Chief Inspector of Schools, Steve Sinnott, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Europe’s largest teaching union said

“Christine Gilbert has identified the obvious; the quality of teaching and learning in schools is of paramount importance.  In short, what matters are standards not structures.

“This should end the arguments of all those wanting to create choice and diversity
and a  boutique of different types of school. Supporting teachers in the classroom rather than obsessing with deconstructing local authority schools is what is important for our children’s education”.
