Statement on nanny salaries survey

23 January 2008

The Professional Association of Nursery Nurses (PANN) has commented on the latest survey of nanny salaries from Nannytax and Nursery World.

PANN Senior Professional Officer Tricia Pritchard said: “This survey is based on responses from families using the Nannytax service. Those families using such a reputable service are, by their very nature, going to be the ones who pay a fair salary and ensure that taxes and other deductions are made.

"My worry is that it is still the case that the fast majority of nanny employers do not use such companies and therefore there is no way of knowing if these findings reflect the position overall.

"PANN represents far too many nannies who are being paid just the minimum wage and working in excess of 45 hours per week. Sadly, we still come across nannies who are paid cash in hand and whose employers make no contributions or deductions for tax and national insurance.

"Of course, we welcome any upward trend, but we must be careful not to suggest that we have reached the happy position where all nannies are in receipt of a fair salary."
