RNIB Cymru at Eisteddfod: Employing people with sight problems

3 August 2006

RNIB Cymru will be attending the Eisteddfod between 5 and 12 August 2006 at Swansea with a stand promoting employing people who are blind or partially sighted.  The stand has been sponsored by Communities @One, part of the European Social Funding programme from the Welsh Assembly Government.

The stand will feature a giant interactive snakes and ladders game demonstrating the barriers people face in employment.  There will also be a demonstration of the new Welsh speaking Supernova – a programme that will read a computer screen for people who cannot see the print.

Caroline Oram, Employment Services Manager commented “75 per cent of people who are blind or partially sighted and of working age are unemployed, this figure that has not changed for over a decade.  We are delighted to have the opportunity to let organisations know about the financial support and practical options for adaptations that will enable them to employ people with sight problems.  The Welsh speaking speech reader is a great example of this.”

To make sure children are kept entertained there will be a badge maker for children to create their own badges.
