Age Concern’s response to the Department of Health’s launch of 11 new pilot schemes today to explore self-assessment for people with long-term needs

Friday 4 August, 2006

Gordon Lishman, Director General of Age Concern, said:

“The pilot schemes announced today are good news for older people but must be monitored carefully. Organising vital support services around the needs of the individual rather than having a 'one size fits all' approach makes absolute sense and is long-overdue. Older people should be given the opportunity to shape the support they receive.

“The Government must now ensure that the projects actually reach those who currently find services most difficult to access, including carers and older people with mental health needs.”
