IN FEBRUARY this year, a delegation from the All Party Parliamentary Group for Cuba, headed by the group’s Chair, Dr Ian Gibson MP, visited the island and were shown around schools, universities, cultural sites and health care and science research centres. Public Health and Education have been high on the agenda for Cuba since the revolution in 1959 – and the country’s achievements in both these fields, in spite of the US embargo and the collapse of the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc, are striking.
