SINCE DECEMBER 2003, eight Eastern Asian countries have reported national outbreaks of highly pathogenic  avian influenza (HPAI) in domestic poultry, mainly chickens and ducks. So far, over 100 million birds have died as a result of the infection or slaughtered in the apparently futile attempt to control the spread of the infection.
