Honouring a great statesman
Rt Hon Baroness Boothroyd travelled to South Africa earlier this year in her capacity as Chancellor of the Open University to present former South African President Nelson Mandela with an honorary doctorate. The presentation was made in the garden of President Mandela’s Cape Town residence on the morning of February 4. Among those present was the Vice-Chancellor of the Open University, Brenda Gourley, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, and the High Commissioner and Deputy High Commissioner. Here Baroness Boothroyd discusses her lifelong opposition to Apartheid, her first meeting with President Mandela and her impressions of the ceremony and of the man as he is today.
