National security strategy due
Lord West

Gordon Brown will this week publish the government's national security strategy, Lord West has said.

The security minister said that the prime minister would unveil the first of the annual reports on Wednesday.

It will include "specific" proposals for tackling the terror threat as well as issues such as bird flu, flooding and failed states, he told BBC1's Politics Show.

"There are some areas which we have got very well under control; there are other areas where a lot of work is needed and what this is doing is identifying that and giving us a focus as a way to move
forward," he said.

"We will show where we have done a lot of good work and we will indicate where we are going to do more work.

"I don't want to steal the prime minister's thunder for next Wednesday but we will come up with some specifics.

"If there was an easy answer to all of this we would not have had to go down this route. It is highly complicated and it is very difficult... but we are leading the world on this."
