Parliament prorogues ahead of schedule
Houses of parliament

Parliament has prorogued ahead of next week's Queen's speech after agreement was reached between MPs and peers on outstanding legislation.

The Commons and Lords gathered briefly on Wednesday to wind up the long post-election session a day ahead of schedule.

Deadlock was averted on Tuesday night when the Conservatives decided to back down on opposition to the Police and Justice Bill.

Tory peers had combined with Liberal Democrats to insist on amendments on fast-track extraditions to the US.

But after the Commons twice overturned the changes, the second chamber relented by 174 votes to 96, although the Lib Dems remained opposed to the legislation.

The usual end of session 'ping-pong' between the two chambers largely failed to materialise.

After "adapting it to make it workable", the government accepted a Lords amendment to the Road Safety Bill, which will see money from speed cameras spent on other transport safety projects, while agreement was also reached on the Armed Forces Bill.
