Welsh youth health action plan launched
First minister Rhodri Morgan has launched a five-year initiative to improve the health and well-being of young people in Wales.
The plan was being launched at a food and fitness for children and young people conference in Cardiff on Thursday.
The scheme sets out how children and young people can be pointed in the right direction to eat well, stay fit, and achieve a high standard of health.
"It provides young people with increased opportunities to make informed decisions about diet and exercise to produce benefits that extend well into the future," according to the plan.
Minister for education Jane Davidson was also launching an "appetite for life" consultation at the conference.
This report introduces more stringent standards for school lunches and sets new minimum standards for all food and drink available throughout the school day.
But Plaid Cymru's shadow education minister Janet Ryder said the assembly government had only acted after celebrity chef Jaime Oliver's school meals campaign.
"Four years ago, Plaid was ridiculed by New Labour when we sought to restrict the sale of junk food in our schools," she said.
"It has taken Jamie Oliver for them to see sense in England after over nine years in power and now Rhodri Morgan's government has finally decided to see fit to issue a consultation.
"What parents really want is immediate action to end the scandal of poor food in schools."
