Welsh nationalists stand by leader after poor poll showing

Plaid Cymru has said its leadership team will "share the blame" for any failures in its election campaign.

The party had a disappointing Thursday night, losing its Ceredigion seat to the Welsh Liberal Democrats.

And the nationalists also failed to win their top target seat of Ynys Mon, which was retained by Labour.

Senior party leaders discussed the setbacks at a meeting on Monday.

After what was described as a "full and frank" discussion, party president Dafydd Iwan was given the full backing of his colleagues.

In a statement issued after the meeting, Iwan said Plaid Cymru would "learn from the disappointments of Ceredigion and Ynys Mon".

He said the party "will be looking into several aspects of our election campaign to see what lessons can be learned".

But he also pointed to other constituencies which Plaid held with increased majorities.

"We must share the blame for any shortcomings, and take positive messages from the excellent successes in Carmarthen East, Meirionnydd Nant Conwy and Caernarfon," said Iwan.

"I am grateful for the support of my colleagues.

"There are issues to be considered, including how best to present our message as a party, especially when faced with wall to wall coverage for the other three parties.

"We must move on to continue with our campaign to secure a proper parliament for Wales, with powers to meet the needs of the people of Wales."
