Reshuffle: In Brief
In a wide-ranging government reshuffle Tony Blair has sought to rebalance his government to the new-look House of Commons.
The key details of the Cabinet level appointments are given below.

- Paul Murphy leaves the post of Northern Ireland secretary to become chairman of the parliamentary intelligence and security committee.
- Peter Hain moves from his post as Commons leader to become Northern Ireland secretary at a critical time in the peace process. Hain also retains the post of Wales secretary.
- Geoff Hoon moves from defence to take over as leader of the Commons.
- Blairite loyalist John Reid becomes secretary of state for defence, leaving the Department of Health.
- Reid is replaced at health secretary by Patricia Hewitt, who vacates the Department of Trade and Industry.
- Alan Johnson becomes secretary of state for productivity, energy and industry, replacing Hewitt in a revamped DTI.
- David Blunkett re-enters the government to take over Johnson's old post of work and pensions secretary.
- John Prescott loses part of his ODPM empire to David Miliband, who becomes minister of communities and local government.
- Prescott becomes first secretary of state to compensate for the reduction in his direct responsibilities.
- Health minister John Hutton becomes the chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, replacing Alan Milburn who leaves the government at his own request.
- Des Browne leaves the Home Office to become chief secretary to the Treasury, where he replaces the departing Paul Boateng.
- Douglas Alexander becomes the minister for Europe - number two to Jack Straw, who remains at the Foreign Office. Alexander will attend Cabinet, although he will not be a full member.
