Welsh Lib Dems highlight plans to scrap council tax

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have attacked council tax rebanding as the election campaign enters its final 48 hours.

The party argues that council tax is a regressive tax which often hits the weakest in society hardest.

Lib Dem candidates highlighted the impact that the rebanding of houses had on the people of Wales.

And they stressed their policy to scrap the system and replace it with a local income tax.

Jenny Willott, Lib Dem candidate for Cardiff Central, said: "The Labour run assembly promised us that rebanding would not be used to gather any extra money.

"But many residents, especially pensioners, up and down Wales have found their bills going up, while their ability to pay remains the same."

Willott maintained that people in Wales want council tax scrapped and added: "It's a shame the Labour government isn't listening."

Alison Goldsworthy, Lib Dem candidate for Cardiff West, stressed that the party had campaigned against the council tax ever since its introduction.

And she said "We believe that a local income tax, based on the ability to pay, is a much fairer system to raise money locally.

"Opinion polls show that this is a view that has gained considerable support during the election campaign as more and more people back our call to axe the unfair council tax."

The Welsh Lib Dems will also be touring a poster van around Cardiff on Tuesday showing the the potential for Lib Dem gains in seven Welsh seats.
