Liam Fox: Warning voters it's "now or never"

The Conservative Party has launched its latest poster campaign urging voters to "tell Mr Blair what you think" on polling day.

The party appear to be undeterred by criticism that it is running an overly negative campaign, and have chosen to attack Tony Blair and his record as prime minister.

The black and white poster shows a picture of the prime minister, and reads: "Iraq. Stealth taxes. Immigration. It's now or never to tell him what you think."

It will be displayed on 1000 sites across the country.

A separate poster, displayed on another 2000 sites, carries the message: "Imagine another five years of him".

Speaking at the launch on Friday morning, party co-chairman Liam Fox said: "There is just one week to go until the election. It's now or never for people to tell Mr Blair what they think."

"They can reward Mr Blair for eight years of broken promises and for his lies on important issues like Iraq, immigration and taxation.

"Or they can vote Conservative, and support a party that has taken a stand and is committed to action on the issues that really matter to people."

And referring directly to the trust issue, Fox accused the prime minister of lying about Conservative health proposals and economic policies, saying "it is not surprising".

"If he's prepared to lie to take us to war, he's prepared to lie to win an election," Fox added.

And shadow chief secretary George Osbourne, who joined Fox at the event, also attacked Blair.

Osbourne accused the prime minister of lying about tax increases in past election campaigns, and suggested the same thing was happening this time round.

"We all know that Tony Blair lies about tax before elections," he said.

"Now in this election, he says people shouldn't make any assumption that taxes will go up if Labour wins.

"But the independent Institute of Fiscal Studies says Labour will have to put up taxes by £11bn to pay for the shortfall in their spending plans."

And he added: "In nine days time people will have to make a choice. But they should beware: whatever he says now, a vote for Tony Blair is a vote for higher taxes."
