Welsh Lib Dems pledge green action

Climate change: election issue

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have highlighted their plans to deliver a cleaner environment.

Putting green issues at the heart of its campaign on Wednesday, the party called for cleaner transport and cleaner energy.

The Welsh Lib Dems are promising that their manifesto, to be launched later this week, will have a green thread running right through it.

Karen Roberts, the party's candidate in the Rhondda constituency, said: "The enormous challenge of climate change means that often people feel powerless to do anything about it.

"But if we are to reduce our footprint on the environment we have to act locally.

"In the Rhondda, kerbside recycling is fairly widespread, but Welsh Liberal Democrats believe it should be available to every household across Wales.

"People want to do their bit; it is the job of government to enable it to happen.

"It needs investment in the infrastructure to support recycling.

"As more and more people recycle their waste, we need facilities in each borough to process them in to useful products."

Ceirion Rees, candidate for Merthyr, added that tackling congestion and pollution was "a win-win situation".

Rees said it "means cleaner, greener towns and cities, and a better quality of life".
