Plaid Cymru promises to 'build a better Wales'
Plaid Cyrmu

Plaid Cymru has promised Welsh voters a stronger economy and a fairer society.

Publishing its election manifesto on Monday, the nationalists highlighted plans to boost the NHS and increase pensions.

"This manifesto is a programme which has at its core the need to support and strengthen public services, and to remove injustice and inequality so evident in our society," said policy director Simon Thomas.

Plaid aims to cut waiting lists and waiting times, and establish more walk-in centres and diagnostic treatment centres to ease the pressure on hospital accident and emergency wards.

All people of retirement age would receive a "citizens' pension", with a single pensioner receiving £106 per week and a pensioner couple receiving £161.

The government's pension credit scheme would be scrapped, with Plaid saying that around a third of pensioners in Wales do not claim.

Parliament

Other policies include the establishment of "a real parliament" with legislative powers including over the criminal justice service and policing.

The manifesto also includes a pledge to tackle climate change by encouraging the development of renewable energy and a 50 per cent tax rate on earnings over £50,000 per year.

Existing subsidies would be used to encourage the public to install mini roof wind turbines or solar panels in their homes.

"Plaid Cymru believes a better Wales means shorter NHS waiting lists and waiting times, it means providing a decent standard of living for everybody, it means ensuring people feel safe in their communities, and it means tackling the growing threat of climate change to ensure the generations to come have a clean and sustainable planet to live in," said Thomas.

"A strong parliament for Wales, as recommended by the Richard commission will lead to a better Wales for everybody.

"We ask the people of Wales to have faith in a party which has a vision for Wales, a vision for a fair society, a sustainable environment, a strong economy and a world of peaceful co-existence."
