Kennedy: Tough and smart on crime?

The Liberal Democrats would scrap planned for identity cards and spend the money on high visibility policing, Charles Kennedy has said.

The pledge came a day after Metropolitan police commissioner Sir Ian Blair said he backed ID cards as a weapon in the fight against terrorism.

Promising a "tough and smart" approach to law and order on Monday, Kennedy said part of the move would include getting 10,000 more officers on the beat.
