Kennedy out of campaign as wife enters hospital
Charles Kennedy

Charles Kennedy has cancelled all campaigning and delayed the publication of his party's manifesto after his pregnant wife was admitted to hospital.

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Menzies Campbell will run the party's election campaign until Mr Kennedy returns to the political frontline.

The party said that its manifesto publication, due to take place on Tuesday, had been postponed as a result.

Liberal Democrat sources confirmed that Sarah Kennedy had been taken to hospital but said she had not gone into labour.

"Sarah has gone into hospital. Charles has spoken to her and he says she is fine," said a party spokeswoman.

The Kennedys will remain in London on Monday, the base for the forthcoming general election.

Mr Kennedy has been engaged in a hectic bout of electioneering. The couple attended the wedding of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall on Saturday.

"It is wonderful for us both and we are extremely grateful for the superb clinical and midwifery support which we have received. Everything went very smoothly and we are looking forward to returning home as a family in due course"
