The left-wing fervour of the inner city wards, which has made the city council a no-go area for the Conservatives for many years, is broadly balanced by the constituency’s outer wards.

Ian Gibson has been reselected for the next election.

One would expect further regeneration and urbanisation to strengthen Labour's hand here, although the safety of this seat could well be undermined.
