North Down
Constituency profile
Lady Hermon can expect to hold the seat by building up the incumbency factor but much will depend on growing Unionist alienation from the Agreement, which could shred the UUP vote throughout Northern Ireland.
Indeed the defection of Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson to the DUP makes this a distinct possibility.
There is no prospect of victory for either Nationalist party - the SDLP or Sinn Fein - in North Down.
At the 2001 election they won 4.2 per cent of the vote between them, and even the former Sinn Fein publicity director Danny Morrison admitted that he cheered Hermon’s victory over McCartney.
