North East Hertfordshire
Constituency profile
That this constituency is now possibly under threat from Labour is a sign of how much the Conservatives have suffered in the 1990s.
What was once a majority of over 11,000 is now struggling to reach 3,500. With the exception of Letchworth, this should be prime Conservative territory.
However, at the moment it would take fewer than 4,000 Liberal Democrats, voting tactically, to hand this seat to Labour.
The general election results in 2001 and the local election results of 2003 were encouraging for the Conservatives, but there is still considerable work to be done before this can again be considered a safe seat.
