Constituency profile

Now sandwiched between two Liberal Democrat seats, Chesterfield and Sheffield Hallam, the constituency so far shows no sign of going the same way.

The Lib Dems have only three councillors on North East Derbyshire District Council and have always come third in general elections.

But then, 20 years ago, the same could have been said about Chesterfield.

Mr Barnes has decided not to stand in the next election.

It remains to be seen whether his success is due to 'personality' politics or a strong Labour ideology in the seat.
