Prentis re-elected as Unison chief
Dave Prentis

Newly re-elected Unison chief Dave Prentis has warned the government he will continue to oppose its plans to reform public sector pensions entitlement.

Prentis took some 75 per cent of the votes in a ballot of union members, the results of which were announced on Wednesday.

In second place was Roger Bannister with 16.9 per cent, while Jon Rogers trailed in third with 7.5 per cent.

Prentis said his re-election was a personal vote of confidence in the policies he has implemented since taking over in 2001.

He said the union, which has some 1.3 million members, was united "around a mainstream common agenda".

And ministers were told that the union would continue to oppose plans to reform the pension entitlements of millions of public sector workers.

"The membership has endorsed that agenda and the direction in which we have taken the union," Prentis said.

"Working in partnership with officers and lay members, we have taken the union forward.

"Unison is growing in strength and is a strong, united, independent, campaigning union which puts the interests of its members first.

"Unison will continue to stand up for Unison members, especially where that means tackling government and those who wield power.

"That is what members expect and that is what they deserve.

"We will continue our campaigns to defend our members' interests, particularly to defend their pensions, to speak up for public service workers and for the services they provide."
