Hitchin and Harpenden
Constituency profile
That the Conservative majority in this constituency is so (comparatively) low is rather surprising.
This is 'true blue' territory, served by an active and dedicated MP.
While neither Labour nor the Liberal Democrats can, as yet, mount a credible challenge, the small majority should be of concern to the Conservatives.
This seat was formed from three Conservative-held constituencies, with average majorities of just over 13,000.
It seems that the low turnout may well be to blame for the deceptively small majority.
There is no reason why this seat should not be returning a Conservative representative with a majority of over 10,000 and the Conservatives cannot claim to have truly recovered until this is the case.
