This constituency is recovering well after the foot-and-mouth crisis and both the rural and urban components of the seat are benefiting from an influx of investment for its regeneration.

Although Labour achieved disappointing results in the local elections, this can in no way be seen as an indicator of what might happen at the next general election and the seat remains safe for Labour.
