In 2001 Folkestone and Hythe was the 30th Liberal Democrat target seat.

However, Michael Howard fended off their electoral challenge then and is likely to do so again as leader of the Opposition, unless he is ambushed by large-scale tactical co-operation between the two centre-left parties.
