Bethnal Green and Bow
Constituency profile
On paper Oona King's majority should be safe in this Labour stronghold.
However, the seat has changed radically in social, ethnic and economic terms since the Second World War.
Opinion poll data indicates that around 75 per cent of ethnic minorities who vote support Labour, but Conservative inroads following the selection of a Bangladeshi candidate in 1997 suggest that Labour may not always monopolise this important section of the electorate.
King's support for the war in Iraq may be a significant factor for many voters, and the candidacy of Respect leader George Galloway should ensure, if nothing else, a very interesting contest.
