Manchester Gorton
Constituency profile
Labour dominance here is assured.
The Tories, for one, cannot muster a single seat on Manchester Metropolitan Borough Council, let alone mount a credible challenge for a Westminster seat in Gorton.
The Liberal Democrats are clearly the only thorn in Labour’s side, particularly at local level.
A serious Westminster challenge is still a long way off, but demographics are changing fast here.
The outer fringe of Manchester’s inner city is becoming ever more upwardly mobile: a corollary of the city’s 21st century cultural and economic renaissance.
With house prices soaring in once undesirable estates and the builders just moving out of the new luxury loft apartments, perhaps the ever-dextrous Liberal Democrats will find some more middle-class converts in the near future.
