This is, and looks set to remain, a Labour seat.
However, the fact that the Conservatives made up a lot of ground in the 2003 National Assembly for Wales elections, combined with the shocking local election results in 2004, suggests that Labour cannot take for granted this South Wales seat.
Without the incumbency factor in the next general election, the new Labour candidate will be hoping to minimise the impact of a long-serving MP standing down.
