Ashfield’s flirtation with Conservatism was a quarter of a century ago.

There are now no Conservatives or Liberal Democrats on Ashfield District Council.

The defence secretary, Geoff Hoon, may have powerful enemies to contend with, but they are not to be found in his constituency, at least not in any strategic numbers.

However, the low turnout and the losses of Labour in the last local elections is a reminder that no seat should be taken for granted.
