The Liberal Democrats have managed to overturn 123 years of Conservative rule and are apparently installing themselves in this seat for some time to come.

Their progress has been remarkable: to overturn the long Conservative tenure was in itself an impressive achievement, but then in 2001, to take over another 9 per cent off the Conservatives and post a majority of over 9,000 is truly impressive.

The Conservatives cannot afford to lose seats like Lewes to the Liberal Democrats if they ever wish to form another government.
