Constituency profile

In some ways Portsmouth North is a conservative place, which tends to favour the incumbent; but Syd Rapson has decided to retire from Parliament at the next general election.

With his departure, Labour could lose a considerable personal vote, although the party has selected Sarah McCarthy-Fry, an experienced local politician, as their candidate.

Despite the figures, the seat should be considered marginal and she will not be able to take it for granted.

The Liberal Democrats, who have selected Gary Lawson as their prospective parliamentary candidate, are hoping to build on their success in Portsmouth South and turn the seat into a three-way marginal.

But the Conservative parliamentary spokesperson, Penny Mordaunt, is still likely to be the main challenger.
