This is the Tories' number one target seat for the next general election.

It will be both a spectacular failure for the Tories and a spectacular success for the Liberal Democrats if Patsy Calton can hold onto this seat and outlast her predecessor Dr Winstanley.

The Liberal Democrats' excellent local organisation, tried and tested doorstep activism and local focus will stand them in good stead.

But with such a small majority, it looks as if the future of the seat may be determined by national sentiments as much as by local issues.
