Wantage
Constituency profile
Wantage is historically a safe Tory seat and the Conservative troubles of recent times have done little to change that.
However, barring a dramatic upturn in fortunes, the Conservatives can no longer bank on a 50 per cent share of the vote, and must improve on their current standing, so not to leave themselves vulnerable to further inroads into their majority.
They must also hope that Labour and the Liberal Democrats do not see fit to join forces. However, local election results of 2003 signalled an upturn in support for the Tories, and they will be hoping to capitalise on this to improve their majority in the next general election.
