Knowsley North and Sefton East

Constituency profile

The constituency comprises two very separate entities.

Knowsley is full of areas of poverty with a real and pressing problem, while the wards from Sefton are far more pleasant and contribute to the strange social mix of this seat.

The social and economic nature of the two parts of the constituency means that there will be inevitable changes here over the next decade or so.

It is likely that the population shift has not finished and that there will be realignment in electoral importance of the working class areas in Kirkby and the more middle class Sefton suburbs.

While Labour is likely to be able to hold a sizeable majority for now, the emergence nationally of a fighting Liberal Democrat or Conservative Party, coupled with low turnouts in the Knowsley wards, could make for more interesting electoral contests in the future.
