Faversham and Mid Kent
Constituency profile
Patrician Toryism has deep roots in this part of Kent, and the people of Faversham and Mid Kent are unlikely to succumb to New Labour’s appeal, having firmly resisted it in 1997.
The Liberal Democrats have a sizeable municipal presence on the Tory-controlled Swale Borough Council and sister council Maidstone, but not primarily in wards within this constituency.
They also have a strong record of successful campaigns on local environmental issues, but their local strength is not yet reflected in general election results and to the extent that they pose a threat at all, it may be more to Labour's second place.
This seat is then, in all likelihood, safe for the Tory party.
However, the inclusion of troubled urban areas in Faversham and east Maidstone makes this a two-speed constituency, where the one-nation objective of Benjamin Disraeli (former MP for East Maidstone) might be gainfully employed.
