Favourable boundary and demographic changes have made this Labour territory and even with the trouble surrounding the MP’s selection in 2001, the Tories still need a swing of 11.7 per cent to win here.

Despite appearances, the Liberal Democrats aren’t in any real danger of overtaking the Tories.

They benefited from a large protest vote last time around and this is unlikely to be repeated with similar enthusiasm.

Forthcoming boundary changes are likely to make this a safer Labour seat.
