Having held out against the Labour challenge in 1997, Richard Shepherd should be safe here for the next election and beyond if that year proves to be the Conservatives’ low point.

The Liberal Democrat vote has been squeezed about as much as possible and the result in 2001 and local election results show the Conservatives in more convincing command once again.
